JAMALI

Jamali is a celebrated artist who brings together mysticism and quantum mechanics in beautiful and powerful expressionist art. His work involves what Jamali calls his fresco tempera technique. Ground pigments are applied to a prepared canvas, which Jamali dances on. According to Donald Kuspit, one of America's foremost art critics, "the result is a highly textured, intricate surface, simultaneously esoteric and erotic, intimate yet peculiarly forbidding and inscrutable."

Jamali's canvas dancing is similar to that of the Sufi's, whose swirling, repetitive dances often induce trance. His dancing is mystical in that it aims for spiritual transcendence that is reflected in the art. Elusive visionary faces often emerge on the surface of his paintings. Butterfly of Kathmandu (1993) is emblematic of his work as it portrays a butterfly in an ecstatic, spiritualized state. It reveals a wonder for being.

Many of Jamali's surfaces contain twigs, leaves and even the remains of insects. The heavily encrusted result has the rich patina of an archeological find. The unity of organic and inorganic matter, and the dynamic process that bring them together, provide a peculiar materiality and lush energy to the paintings.

Jamali has created a large body of work using several innovative techniques. His works are in over 1500 private collections in the United States and Europe. His paintings are displayed in galleries and museums, including a curated one-man exhibit in one of the largest museums in Milan, Italy.

Jamali grew up in the ancient crossroads city of Peshawar, near the Khyber Pass in the northwestern Himalayas. At age 16, he went to live in primitive and austere conditions in the Rajasthan desert for five years, and from there he went to Kafiristan, a tiny valley high in the Himalayas. In 1973, he traveled extensively in Europe, then emigrated to the United States and became a U.S. citizen. Since then, he has lived in Winter Park, Florida.
